There’s a lot to report since our previous newsletter, regarding both Silverdale Farm and Grant Bloodstock.
Silverdale Farm is entering an exciting new era with improvements and additions in all areas of activity, in our personnel, in our facilities and in our lifeblood, the thoroughbred stock on whose success we depend.
We are delighted to announce that Robert Petith has been appointed as general manager of Silverdale Farm, commencing in April. Robert is a highly respected and vastly experienced horseman who comes to us from managing premier Queensland nursery Canning Downs for John Barnes and Joy Mackay.
He has excelled in many facets of the industry, from winning the Hunter Valley Thoroughbred Breeders Scholarship to the Irish National Stud, to the Australian Equine Associate Horse Industry Scholarship to Hagyard Medical Institute in Kentucky, or to playing leading roles at Glenlogan Park Queensland and the fabled Woodlands Stud in New South Wales before joining Canning Downs, his CV is a distinguished one.
Robert is looking forward to his new role at Silverdale and we are fortunate to have such a well credentialed leader driving our breeding and racing operation into the future.
Jenny Sassier continues her role as Silverdale’s Stud Manager, having played an integral part in the farm’s development. Jenny’s CV is another bristling with credits as she has worked at Arrowfield as head of its foaling unit, as well as at Coolmore USA, The National Stud at Newmarket, England, as well as in Japan, South Africa and New Zealand, with high level skills as a vet nurse among her many accomplishments.
Jenny’s enthusiasm for Silverdale Farm, her love for horses and their care, has been a notable part of our success to this point and she is excited about the challenges ahead as the farm’s size and activities increase in this new era.
Silverdale Farm is a growing enterprise, both in terms of bloodstock and land holdings. We have been fortunate to be able to purchase two adjoining properties, Cloudlands and Bladon, bringing the farm’s overall size to some 230 acres, located just under two hours from Sydney at Avoca in the magnificent Southern Highlands of New South Wales.
Cloudlands is Colts and Fillies and the front section of the property has wonderful large, gently undulating paddocks with plenty of natural shade. Bladon has a lovely main house and guest accommodation. We will also be constructing very well appointed staff quarters where privacy and quality will be the design goals.
We have been gradually developing Silverdale to the highest standards, whether it’s the stables, yards, fencing or the impressive water reticulation and drainage that has been installed throughout the property.
This programme of adding to the existing facilities and constructing new ones is continuing apace with a new yearling barn, maintenance and feed shed currently being erected. Refurbishment of older structures on the two new properties and the staff accommodation at Bladon, all currently underway or nearing completion.
We’ve been steadily acquiring well bred yearlings and potential broodmares for our bloodstock portfolio, the cream of the crop will be pencilled in to make Silverdale home when their racing careers have concluded. We will have more yearlings to offer at the major sales each year, and in an exciting new development, we are delighted to announce that Silverdale Farm will be selling under its own banner and also consignment selling for a select few clients commencing with the 2021 sales series.
We have been most appreciative of the efforts of consignors who have prepared our yearlings up to the current season and we relish the challenge of presenting our own drafts next year. Robert Petith’s experience and success in this area will be a great asset. He has a history of turning out a quality draft.
Our racing operation Grant Bloodstock has continued our commitment to investing in top quality bloodstock in our own right as well as in partnership with industry leaders such as Chris Waller’s Harras Syndicates, The Newgate Colts Partnership and Louis Mihalyka’s Laurel Oak Bloodstock. We have some high quality colts and fillies running in our various colours on most major racedays and have had considerable successes though more stakes races and Group Ones will always be welcome, that’s our target.
Among our current stars is Sweet Scandal who recently finished a very creditable 4th in the Gr.2 Guy Walter S at Randwick, she is already the winner of six races, multiple Group placed and over $400K in prizemoney. Vaucluse Bay has taken his earnings to over $750K. He is a real marvel. Impasse has recorded multiple Saturday wins in Brisbane. We have some exciting young horses in work including Todman S-Gr.2 placegetter Blondeau, also Reloaded who was runnerup in the Gr.2 Hobartville S and a close 4th in the Randwick Guineas-Gr.1 and Barbaric the Gr.3 Black Opal winner.
There are currently some beautifully bred mares such as Alassio, Canberra Endean Rose, Imposing Lass, Kentucky Diva, Lippizan, Ring da Belle, Sense Of Hite, Sweet Sherry, Tarabai and Texarcana (dam of multiple Gr.1 winner Rebel Dane) residing at Silverdale, to name a few.
The Autumn carnival is in full swing as we send this out, exciting times lie ahead with the 2020 Inglis Easter Sale also being only a few weeks away. We look forward to catching up with everyone at the races and sales, please come up and say hello.
